REDBY, Minn. -- A 41-year-old California man was killed when his vehicle collided head-on with a school bus Tuesday morning on the Red Lake Indian Reservation.

The Red Lake Department of Public Safety responded about 7:30 a.m. to the crash on Minnesota Highway 1 near Redby, according to a news release. The bus was carrying 19 children in kindergarten through fifth grade.

The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. The bus driver suffered fractures to his hand and wrist.

Most of the children were taken to Red Lake Indian Health Service hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries and released, officials said.

Investigators determined that the man’s vehicle was traveling east on Highway 1 when it crossed the center line and struck the bus head on. Speed likely was a factor, authorities said.
