MERRIFIELD, N.D.-Investigators are trying to determine why a driver's pickup left road and drover nearly 60 feet through a home in Grand Forks County, leaving both with significant damage Thursday night.

The damage was so extensive that the home "may be a complete loss," Sgt. Andy Schneider of the Grand Forks County Sheriff's Office said.

A 2016 Chevrolet pickup veered off County Road 6 about 2 miles west of Merrifield and traveled for a half-mile before hitting the house at 1165 15th St. N.E. about 8:45 p.m., according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Ardell Johnson, 90, of Manvel, N.D., was driving the pickup, Highway Patrol Lt. Troy Hischer said. He was transported to Altru Hospital after the crash, and his condition was unknown Friday morning.

Schneider said an underlying medical condition may have caused him to veer off the road.

The homeowners were not home during the crash, but a babysitter and the couple's newborn child were upstairs. They were not hurt, but it was difficult to get them out of the home because the stairs were destroyed, investigators said.

Insurance companies later will determine the cost of damage to the home, Hischer said. He's unsure if the family was displaced.

Merrifield is about 3 miles southwest of Grand Forks.
