The driver of a white Pontiac Grand Prix was arrested for drunken driving Monday afternoon after his vehicle smashed into a light pole on North Washington Street near 12th Avenue North.

The vehicle was traveling north around 4:30 p.m. when witnesses said it swerved to the right and struck the light pole, heavily damaging the entire front of the car.

Witnesses said Michael Kornkven, 19, of Bottineau, N.D., got out of his car and dropped something off in a nearby patch of trees. Police later retrieved a beer can from the area.

The vehicle's airbag deployed and the driver was treated by emergency technicians from Altru Ambulance, but he was not transported to the hospital.

Kornkven was arrested for DUI and minor consuming alcohol and transported to the Grand Forks County Correctional Center. He also was cited for care required.
