The city of Grand Forks and UND will celebrate the hanging of a mural started by UND art and design professor Joel Jonientz on Sat. Oct. 11 at the corner of Walnut Street and South Fifth Street.

The celebration will follow a commemoration of North Dakota’s 125th anniversary of statehood at 11:30 a.m. at nearby Centennial Park, which was developed to mark the state’s centennial anniversary 25 years ago, and sits at the intersection of Walnut and Kittson Avenue.

Commissioned by the city of Grand Forks and the Near Southside Neighborhood for the storage facility near Grand Forks’ police headquarters, the mural was part of the Mayor’s Urban Neighborhood Initiative.

It was finished by UND Art and Design faculty and students after Jonientz’s death earlier this year.
