A project to improve pedestrian and motorist safety in downtown East Grand Forks will begin next week, resulting in a detour on Demers Avenue, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Motorists will encounter a detour and delays starting Tuesday as crews complete pedestrian accessibility improvements from the Red River to Second Avenue Northeast.

The intersection at Second Street Northwest will close and truck drivers should use alternate routes, according to a release issued by MnDOT.

"Truck traffic seeking access to Crystal Sugar is encouraged to avoid Demers Avenue and follow Gateway Drive," the release states.

Lane closures and shoulder/parking lane closures are expected through the duration of the project, which is expected to last through mid-September.
