Runners of all ages raced 1.25 miles-or 10 furlongs-through downtown Grand Forks on Saturday afternoon, the same day the Kentucky Derby's horses raced the same distance at Churchill Downs.

The Downtown Derby Run, organized by the Downtown Development Association and local running shop See Dick Run, brought dozens of spectators and racers to the downtown block of The Hub Pub, 205 N. Third St., where they raced five quarter-mile laps solo or in a relay.

A group of five women wore their faux-Kentucky Derby best, complete with bonnets, while they waited to race. Seven-year-old Alison Scales, present with her day care, insisted she was faster than her friend-"really fast," in fact.

"I love downtown-the feel, the energy, the vibe," said Richard Dafoe, the namesake and owner of See Dick Run. "When the people are out, it just feels good."
