Devils Lake woman gets probation for stealing from Spirit Lake tribe

A Devils Lake woman has been sentenced to two years of probation for stealing from the Spirit Lake tribe, the U.S. attorney's office said in a news release.

A Devils Lake woman has been sentenced to two years of probation for stealing from the Spirit Lake tribe, the U.S. attorney's office said in a news release.

Kimberly Carlson, 42, was ordered at her sentencing Thursday to pay $5,339 in restitution.

Carlson pleaded guilty Nov. 4 to a charge of embezzlement and theft from a tribal organization.

She worked for the Spirit Lake Office of Victim Assistance in Fort Totten, N.D., from July 2009 until January 2010. As the office's acting director, authorities said, she used money and gift cards that were intended for victims, and she dipped into office funds to pay a friend's electric bills.

Carlson also falsified travel expenses so she would be excessively reimbursed, authorities said.
