BISMARCK — The following are COVID-19 case rates, deaths and hospitalizations tracked by the North Dakota Department of Health as of Thursday, Jan. 6. Because all data are preliminary, some numbers and totals may change from one day to the next.
Statewide case rates
- NEW CASES REPORTED: 1,363
- ACTIVE CASES: 3,721
- DAILY POSITIVITY RATE: 15.4%
- 14-DAY ROLLING POSITIVITY RATE: 10.6%
- TOTAL KNOWN CASES THROUGHOUT PANDEMIC: 179,161
- TOTAL RECOVERED THROUGHOUT PANDEMIC: 173,413
North Dakota's active cases shot up nearly 800 over the previous day. Detected infections in the state have jumped by more than 2,000 since Monday, creating the steepest increase in cases of the pandemic.
Officials say the surging omicron variant represents the most infectious strain of COVID-19 observed during the pandemic.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated this week that 95% of the cases across the country are the omicron strain, but the variant seemingly had not hit North Dakota in full force until this week.
Cass County, which encompasses Fargo, has the most active cases in the state at 1,232. Burleigh County, which includes Bismarck, has 545 active cases. Rolette County leads the state in cases per capita by a wide margin.
The 10.6% rolling positivity rate is the highest since December 2020.

The Department of Health reported four COVID-19 deaths on Thursday, including one each from Cass, Burleigh, Grant and Stark counties.
The state reported just 10 available intensive care beds and 151 regular inpatient beds across the state on Wednesday.
More than 81.3% of residents who have been hospitalized with COVID-19 in the last week were not fully vaccinated.
