COOPERSTOWN, N.D. -- A man accused of trying kill a Fargo police officer has been ruled competent to stand trial on an attempted murder charge.

Darin Dahl of Cooperstown was charged after a 20-hour standoff with authorities last April. Authorities say a bullet fragment hit the helmet of a Fargo officer who was part of the Red River Valley SWAT team.

Griggs County Sheriff Robert Hook said Dahl kicked a chair and threw a pen at a judge during a December hearing.

Dr. Stacey Benson, a clinical psychologist, said Dahl is not competent to help in his defense.

Judge Steven Marquart said he believes the 35-year-old Dahl "is somewhat manipulating the system," and found him competent to stand trial next week.
