A change to the classification of three downtown Thief River Falls lots would be another step forward for a worship center planned for the property.

The City Council approved the first reading of a zoning request earlier this week that would change two of the lots from a type of commercial zone that doesn't allow churches to one that does.

The property is owned by Epiphany Station, which plans to build a 14,000-square-foot worship center and a parking lot in the space, according to site plans filed with the city. The church has been holding services in a local movie theater.

Moving forward with construction means the demolition of all buildings on the property, the church indicated on its rezoning request.

The zoning change needs one more reading on June 7 before becoming official.
