The Salvation Army Challenge will offer some promotions Friday to attract visitors to its kettles.
The Grand Forks Herald and WDAZ-TV are joining forces to raise money for the organization from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday. Herald employees will be at the Wal-Mart Supercenter, while Channel 8 personnel will be at the Home of Economy.
Both sites will offer the "Flood of Memories" DVDs for donations of at least $20. WDAZ produced the two-disc set from its coverage of the 1997 flood and has been selling the package for $19.
Also at both locations, any giver will be able to guess the total amount raised during the seven hours. Whoever comes closest to guessing the total will win $200 worth of gift certificates. Last year, the two Forum Communications Co. media outlets held a competition and raised about $12,000 in the kettles and another $5,000 from a Herald donation. The money from that effort made up 18 percent of the total amount generated from Salvation Army kettles in Grand Forks through the entire holiday season.
