MINOT -- Grand Forks Central found its scoring touch in the final frame, scoring all of their goals in the third period to win their season opener Friday night against Minot.
Seven Central players recorded points, with Jake Purpur, Tanner Corbett and Tom Fisher scoring goals for Central.

"We started getting a little more traffic near the net later on," Central coach Tony Bina said. "After four weeks of practice, it was a good way to start off the year."
Freshman goalie Taner Bender stopped 24 shots for the Knights.

Three Central
wrestlers advance
WAHPETON, N.D. -- Three Grand Forks Central wrestlers advanced to the semifinal round of the Dan Unruh Invitational.
After Friday's second round, Central's T.J. Poole and Erik Jones both reached the 160-pound semifinals. They are in opposite brackets.
At 152, Bryce Fish also reached the semifinals.

Also, Devils Lake's Jacob Lagasse reached today's semifinals at 285.

Clearbrook-Gonvick 66,
Sacred Heart 62
Weston Bakke scored 25 points to lead Clearbrook-Gonvick over East Grand Forks Sacred Heart on Friday night in the season opener for the Eagles.
"It was back-and-forth the last five minutes," Sacred Heart coach Joe Wasfaret said. "We lost it in the last couple of minutes. Our kids played hard."
The Eagles were led by Zach Huot's 25 points.

Northland's Fontes
receives honor
Northland Community and Technical College's Jessica Fontes is a first-team selection on the Division III National Junior College Athletic Association's All-American team.
Fontes, a former East Grand Forks Sacred Heart standout, is a sophomore at Northland, which placed fifth in the national tournament.
She was first in the country in hitting efficiency at 51 percent and second in kills per set at 4.49.

n Wrestling: Grand Forks Red River is in fourth place after Friday's competition in the Mandan Lions tournament. The Riders have 66.5 points. Bismarck is in first with 116. The meet concludes today. Bill Rerick (145), Evan Moser (160), Jared Bertsch (182) and Bryan Bjerk (285) all went 3-0 on the first day.
n Auto racing: The World of Outlaws will race twice during the 2012 season at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks. The Outlaws, the country's top sprint car circuit, will race June 15 and Aug. 17 at RCS. The Outlaws also will race at the Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo on June 16. The circuit will make one other North Dakota appearance in 2012. The Outlaws are scheduled to race Aug. 19 at the Nodak Speedway in Minot.
