CLARIFICATION: John Marshall selected to Air Force Civic Leaders program

John Marshall, who led efforts to keep Grand Forks Air Force Base during past base-closure reviews, recently was selected to the Air Force chief of staff's Air Force Civic Leaders program.

John Marshall, who led efforts to keep Grand Forks Air Force Base during past base-closure reviews, recently was selected to the Air Force chief of staff's Air Force Civic Leaders program.

A story in Saturday's paper misidentified the appointment. The story said Marshall had been named to an Air Mobility Command civilian board. In fact, Marshall was appointed to a higher-level board, one that advises the secretary of the Air Force and the Air Force's top general as opposed to a single command.

The chief of staff's Air Force Civic Leaders are advisers, key communicators and advocates for Air Force issues, according to an Air Force press release about the program.

They provide ideas and feedback to advise the secretary of the Air Force, Air Force chief of staff and Air Force senior leaders about how missions can best be accomplished in their respective areas and about public attitudes toward the Air Force and Air Force activities.

Marshall's appointment carries a three-year term. The Air Force Civic Leaders meet with the secretary and other Air Force leaders at least four times a year and take part in several other group and individual functions.

His first meeting with the group will be Jan. 31 at the Pentagon. And judging by Marshall's long experience with high-level networking, Widman's Candy Shop in Grand Forks might want to ramp up its production of Chippers a few days before then.

"They remain the best possible calling card," Marshall said with a laugh, speaking about Widman's trademark chocolate-covered potato chips.

"You would not believe the positive feelings and goodwill that those little pink boxes inspire."
