The City of Grand Forks is encouraging people to stay away from a section of the Red River throughout the winter where ice may be weak.
Outdoorsmen and women should stay away from a spot on the Red River near 54th Avenue North, the city advised in a news release, where the ice may be weak because of wastewater treatment operations.
The statement said the city will continuously release treated wastewater from its lagoon system throughout the winter months near that site, potentially weakening the ice there.
Warning signs have been placed on the river bank-upstream and downstream-near the site, according to the city.
