Christina Long, Berlin, N.D., letter: Hoeven has been no friend to teachers

BERLIN, N.D. -- My husband and I attended the Medora (N.D.) Musical on Aug. 5. A large group of North Dakota Education Association teachers and school employees also was attending.

I spoke with some of them, and they told me they were supporting Gov. John Hoeven for re-election. "Why?" I asked. "He has been a friend," they answered.

I told them that Tim Mathern, Hoeven's opponent, has always been a great supporter of education. They said they knew that, but Hoeven is in office, so that is who they will support.

North Dakota teachers were at the bottom of the pay scale eight years ago. Hoeven has been in office for eight years, and we have almost a billion dollars in the state treasury.

Yet, teachers are still at the bottom of the pay scale.

Hoeven is your friend? Teachers, do the math. You deserve better.
