Celebrate the Night, Grand Forks' annual alcohol-free, family friendly New Year's Eve celebration, has been canceled due to the weather, organizers announced this afternoon.
The event, which was set to feature live music and activities for kids and families, was going to be held in the Alerus Center for the second year in a row.
Mark Landa, a member of the Celebrate the Night board, said in an e-mail this afternoon that difficult travel conditions during the day are expected to be made even worse later today as an approaching blizzard sweeps across the area.
"Because of safety concerns for our guests, volunteers and performers, the event has been canceled for this evening," Landa wrote.
Landa said refunds will be given for wristbands that have already been purchased. More details about how the refunds will be handled are being worked out, and he said people should visit the Celebrate the Night website at www.celebratethenight.com for more information in the next couple of days.
