Several students from East Grand Forks Sacred Heart School won awards in a local Catholic Daughters of the Americas competition.
Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Marquette No. 677 of Grand Forks, holds the contest each spring. The contest includes both boys and girls and has four areas of competition - art, computer art, poetry poster and essay.
The following Sacred Heart students took third place or better in the competition: Megan Ogaard, Hannah Modeen, Olivia Corbid, Ruthie Hjeldness, Zachary Hilliard, Dustin Walski, Maggie Soeby, Kalli Hanson, Holly Ogaard, Kate Schoenborn, Matt O'Leary, Madeline Lukasz, Caleb Wavra, Sara Johnson, Elizabeth Hoeger and Marie Holden.

The marketing education department at Grand Forks Red River High School this week announced the "I am DECA-cated" award winners for the school year's third quarter.
The winners in each category are: Alex Bakken, Introduction to Marketing; Laura Mathiason, Marketing I; Megan Narlock, Jon Beehler Ashley Delisle; Michael Kraft and Pete Brekke, Marketing II and Chase Fennell, School Store.
This award is given to students who contribute to DECA activities, leadership qualities and academic achievement.
Speech
society inducteesEight East Grand Forks Senior High students were inducted into the National Forensic League this month in the Senior High library. The NFL is a speech society for students.
Seniors Tyler Barrett, Kayla Johnson, Herbie Kretzsinger and Jordan Wolfe, and juniors Chris Barnes, Sarah Doherty, Nick Pederson and Kerianne Trudel were inducted into the honorary speaking organization.
During the induction ceremony, students were presented a candle and flower, and told the symbolism of each color represented, as well as the NFL insignia pin. Kretzsinger was recognized as an NFL national qualifier in extemporaneous speaking. He will travel to Wichita and Derby, Kan., this June to compete.
