THOMPSON, N.D.-Law enforcement are investigating an incident in which a car caught fire Friday night near Grand Forks County Road 17 near County Road 7, just east of Thompson.

Jeremy Buehre, a trooper with the North Dakota Highway Patrol, said the bureau responded to a report of a car on fire at 9:05 p.m. The cause of the fire is not known, but he said it is suspected the car, which was located to the southbound side of 17, suffered a mechanical malfunction because there was oil on the road.

According to Buehre, no one associated with the vehicle was at the scene when responders arrived. The number of occupants in the vehicle and their whereabouts are unknown.

The Thompson Fire Department and Grand Forks Sheriff's Department also responded to the scene.
