The Aug. 15 edition of Prairie Country had some recipes from the 1948 Ladies Aid of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Fairmont, Minn. While many of Grandma's recipes for baked goods are fun to make and delicious, the old canning recipes need updating for safety reasons.

All extension information on home preservation methods are based on the "Complete Guide to Home Canning," Agriculture Information Bulletin 539, September 1994 revision. There has been a lot of research on safety issues since 1948 and we want to share that updated information with the community.

If readers have questions regarding the recipes from Aug. 15 or any aspect of home canning, I would be happy to help share the current information on processing methods and processing times for different items.
