SOUDAN, Minn. -- Construction began Friday on a campground at the once-controversial Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park in northeastern Minnesota that will accommodate more than 250 people nightly in tents and RVs, the Department of Natural Resources said.
The campground at Minnesota’s newest state park -- and the first new park in 30 years -- is expected to open in fall 2016.
“Our vision is to create a model ‘next generation’ state park,” said Erika Rivers, director of the DNR’s Parks and Trails Division. For example, solar panels will help provide electricity for the drive-in and group campground that will also have Wi-Fi.
Another feature is access to the lake, viewed by many as one of the most beautiful in the state. Future phases include cabins and additional hike-in, boat-in and ATV-in campsites.
