LIDGERWOOD, N.D.

A 12-year-old boy was injured Sunday when the barrel of his shotgun exploded as he shot at a pheasant, the Richland County Sheriff's Office said.

The boy was hunting with a relative about five miles west of Lidgerwood when he tripped and fell and the barrel of the shotgun went into the ground. A pheasant got up, and the boy shot at it. The barrel exploded, causing injuries to the boy's face and left hand, the sheriff's office said in a news release.

The boy, identified as Tristin Manikowski of Geneseo, N.D., was treated and released at St. Francis Hospital in Breckenridge, Minn.

The accident, which was reported at 6:47 p.m., is under investigation by the sheriff's office and the North Dakota Game and Fish Department.
