FORT TOTTEN, N.D. -- Police detonated something that resembled a pipe bomb on Tuesday after it was found at Candeska Cikana Community College at the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation, tribal police said.

The object was found in the college's weight room and appeared to have been a homemade weight, not an explosive, sources said.

"A couple of faculty members found a device that didn't look right, so we have protocol that we follow, and the bomb squad was called," said Lane Azure, vice president of academic affairs

The bomb squad came from the Grand Forks Police Department, which provides these kinds of special services throughout northeast North Dakota.

Tuesday was registration day and there were about 200 people at the college when it was evacuated around 1 p.m. Police set up a large perimeter in the back area of the school. Between 3 and 4 p.m., bomb technicians detonated the object, according to sources.

Azure said that registration will resume today at 8 a.m.
