A lead investigator with the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office said he could not say whether foul play was suspected after a body was discovered Saturday morning in the median of U.S. Highway 2.

“We’re still waiting to get a lot more information before I can tell you more than I can right now,” investigator Jake Lane said. “At this point, there is no suspected danger to the public.”

Lane said the North Dakota Highway Patrol first alerted him to the body about 8:30 a.m. Saturday. The body was found just outside Grand Forks west of Wal-Mart, he said.

He confirmed the body was male, but he could not say the age or race, nor could he release whether the body was clothed.

He did say no identification was found with the body, which was transported by ambulance to Altru.

“I don’t know if they were pronounced (dead) at the scene or the hospital,” he said.

He said the body was taken to the UND pathology department for an autopsy.

“Before we release anything, we need to gather all the facts and make notifications,” Lane said.

He said no further information likely would be released until Monday morning.
