The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning is in effect in the Red River Valley and throughout North Dakota.

The blizzard is expected to arrive in areas north of Grand Forks around 5 p.m., in the Grand Forks area around 8 p.m. and areas to the south, including Fargo, around 10 or 11 p.m., the agency said.

The warning takes effect 7 p.m. and will last until 9 a.m. Saturday.

North and northwest winds are expected to increase to between 30 and 45 mph, with gusts of up to 50 mph, according to the weather service. It is predicting 1 to 2 inches of snow. There may be sleet and freezing rain this afternoon and into the early evening, making roads icy.

Temperatures are forecast to drop to minus 28 Saturday night remain below zero until the middle of next week. Winds are expected to produce dangerous wind chill values of 40 to 60 degrees below zero.
