ST. PAUL -- Vice President Joe Biden will stop in St. Paul next Thursday as part of his tour to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the Obama administration’s economic stimulus act.

Biden will visit downtown St. Paul’s Union Depot, which received a $35 million federal grant under the 2009 act, formally called the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The act was designed to boost the U.S. economy in the wake of the 2008 financial collapse.

The 1923 depot, recently restored by Ramsey County at a cost of almost $250 million, is now home to Metro Transit light rail, Amtrak trains and local and intercity buses. It also has thousands of square feet of commercial space.

Union Depot has seen White House interest before in its post-restoration life. In February 2014, President Barack Obama visited the depot to unveil a multibillion-dollar transportation plan.

“This project symbolizes what’s possible,” Obama told a packed crowd in the Lowertown landmark’s ornate concourse.

Biden will use the depot as a backdrop for his stimulus act tour.

The vice president next week will stop in three Mississippi River cities - New Orleans, Memphis and St. Paul - to celebrate the funding the stimulus act’s transportation grants made possible, the White House reported.

Biden has visited Minnesota several times before and made connections with its people.

And late last year, he was a featured speaker at a Washington event honoring former Vice President Walter Mondale. Last week, he called a Minnetonka woman to grieve with her over her brother’s death from leukemia. Biden’s 46-year-old son Beau died of cancer last year.

Biden is now spearheading the Obama administration’s cancer fighting efforts.
