ST. MICHAEL, Minn. - A 17-year-old boy from St. Michael, Minn. sustained leg injuries after his all-terrain vehicle collided with a bear near the Hungryman Campground east of Two Inlets on Sunday afternoon.

According to the family and the boy's father Kevin Barthel, who reported the accident, the bear cub ran across the trail as he was driving down, causing the ATV to roll over and throwing the teen from the vehicle.

Sheriff Tim Gordon said the teen was driving a Honda ATV with three other people from St. Michael on a trail located northeast of Two Inlets.

His injures appeared serious at the time but they turned out to be non-life threatening, Gordon added. The teen was transported to St. Joseph's Area Health Services in Park Rapids.

The bear died on impact, according to Department of Natural Resources officers, who notified the sheriff's office of the accident on Monday.
