Firefighters at Crookston bean plant fire

The Crookston Fire Department put out a small fire in a pea dryer Tuesday evening at the Crookston Bean plant.

According to Fire Chief Tim Froeber, a passerby noticed smoke coming from the building at 1600 South Main Street about 7:40 p.m. and called the department.

Froeber said the fire was confined to the dryer, which was drying around 150 bushels of edible yellow peas.

The firefighters had to dump all of the peas out of the dryer to put out the hot spots, but a company employee told Froeber half of the peas may be salvageable.

Froeber said the department was on scene for about an hour and the dryer was back in working order after a few minor repairs.
