BISMARCK A new state crime report finds more arrests involving alcohol. Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem calls the figures "appalling."
The report from Stenehjem's office says alcohol-related arrests accounted for 40 percent of total arrests in North Dakota last year.
Drunken driving arrests were up by 9.4 percent, from 5,923 in 2005 to 6,480 last year. The report says the highest increase at 31.6 percent was reported among people ages 65 and older.
The report also shows violent crimes in the state went up by almost 31 percent in 2006, from 601 to 786. Stenehjem says it's the largest increase since 2000. He says about 22 percent of those arrested for violent crimes were juveniles.
