UND reported Tuesday its highest spring enrollment numbers ever with 12,733 students.

This beats the previous record set in 2005 by 357.

Growth was fastest among the graduate student population, which itself set a record with 2,351, bringing the university closer to its goal of having grad students make up 20 percent of enrollment.

It's now at 18.5 percent.

Grad school Dean Joey Benoit said recruiters have been aggressive. They've expanded the pool of recruits and, using new technology, are able to personalize their communications to each prospect, he said.

Because of that, he said, UND's been able to target the kind of grad students that is most likely to stick with the program and graduate, rather than dropping out. Things are going so swimmingly that, he said, some programs are getting close to capacity.

While the grad school saw growth across the board, some programs were real stars, such as engineering, social work and nursing. Online classes have proved a hit, too, he said.

Last fall, UND didn't quite make a record but came close to it with the second-highest fall enrollment. The university reported 13,172 students. The record of 13,187 was set in 2004.

For comparison, here's a record of UND spring enrollment for the past several years:

- 2009: 12,076.

- 2008: 11,847.

- 2007: 12,034.

- 2006: 12,321.
