We’ve done it! We’ve made it to Pluto. Good gosh, it took 9 1/2 years to get there traveling faster than any planetary probe we’ve ever sprung into the solar system. While we won’t have close up photos to look at until tomorrow, this image, release this morning, should tide us over for a while. It shows a richly complex world with a few familiar craters and lots of bizarre landforms that look like they’ve seen recent changes.
Alan Stern, principal investigator for the mission was asked if it snowed on Pluto and his answer caught many by surprise: “It sure looks like it.” Right now, New Horizons is still zipping through the Pluto system performing all its data-gathering tasks on autopilot. Tonight around 8 p.m. CDT it’ll “phone home” to let us know how it all went. - See more at: http://astrobob.areavoices.com/2015/07/14/pluto-flyby-a-success/
