Fertilizer/pesticide specialist is hired
BISMARCK -- North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring has appointed a fertilizer and pesticide specialist for his department.
Spencer Wagner will administer the department's fertilizer registration and licensing programs, coordinate the anhydrous ammonia licensing program and assist with the pesticide registration program.
Wagner is a Bismarck native who graduated from Bemidji State University with a major in biology and minor in biochemistry.
Goehring earlier this month created a position in his department to focus on animal feed issues. The person who filled that post -- David Phillips -- had been working as the department's feed, pesticide and fertilizer enforcement supervisor.

Tibetan monks to visit U Mary
BISMARCK -- Tibetan Buddhist monks are making a visit to the University of Mary in Bismarck.
Officials said the monks' visit Tuesday through Friday will emphasize the role of spirituality and religion in human societies and trace what Benedictine values and those of other religious traditions have in common.
The Bismarck Tribune said the visit also is aimed at helping raise awareness of the culture of the Tibetan people and finding sponsors for the Tibetan Children's Education Foundation. The foundation is a nonprofit that supports Tibetan schools and schoolchildren in exile from their homeland.
Schools turn to portable classrooms
MINOT -- Minot school officials are turning to portable classrooms to meet the growing need for space.
The Minot Daily News said portable classrooms are in use at six elementary schools. At Washington Elementary, the current enrollment of 469 students is double the number three years ago.
Educators said the portables are similar to mobile homes, and are a good solution to student growth. But Washington Principal Ione Sautner acknowledged they're not an ideal situation, and she'd rather not have to use them.
