AREA NEWS: Washington Street public input meeting set

A public input meeting to discuss possible improvements to the Washington Street corridor is set for 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Grand Forks City Hall Council Chambers, 255 N. 4th St.

A public input meeting to discuss possible improvements to the Washington Street corridor is set for 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Grand Forks City Hall Council Chambers, 255 N. 4th St.

The areas up for discussion are include Washington Street from 17th Ave South to 8th Ave North, including improvement alternatives for the railroad underpass and the intersection of Washington Street and Demers Ave.

Representatives from Kadrmas, Lee & Jackson, Inc., Grand Forks-East Grand Forks Metropolitan Planning Organization, the North Dakota Department of Transportation and the city of Grand Forks will be on hand to answer questions.

Northland spring commencement set

Spring commencement ceremonies for the East Grand Forks campus of Northland Community and Technical College are set for 11 a.m. May 13 in the Chester Fritz Auditorium in Grand Forks.

The college will award 598 degrees.

The commencement ceremony will begin with a welcome from Vice President Kent Hanson. Jessica Syverson, Medina Ismail and Leah Stewart will deliver student addresses, and Vice President Hanson will deliver closing remarks. General Counsel Gail Olson will speak on behalf of the Board of Trustees and Chancellor McCormick.

Corps recognizes Warren, Minn., resident

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, selected Warren, Minn., resident Roy Lawson as one of its three Civil Servants of the Year this year.

The St. Paul District presents this award annually to the top three or four of its 700 employees. Lawson, who's worked for the Corps of Engineers for seven years and is based in Grand Forks, is a construction control officer in the district's Construction Branch. He received this award in recognition for his outstanding efforts in providing construction expertise and oversight.

Lawson will receive his award at the 34th Annual Minnesota Federal Civil Servant of the Year Awards on May 6 in St. Paul.

MnDOT puts call out for volunteers

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is looking for volunteers for its Adopt a Highway program, a public service campaign where community groups, churches, businesses and individuals pick up litter along Minnesota highways.

There are more than 12,000 miles of state highway in Minnesota of which 9,800 miles are adopted. Currently, there are an estimated 4,500 statewide groups and 45,000 volunteers registered.

Fong: Renter refund filing deadline is May 31

Tax Commissioner Cory Fong on Tuesday issued a reminder to low-income senior citizens and disabled persons that they may be able to receive a refund for part of the money they paid as rent for their home or apartment.

The deadline for filing for the refund is May 31.
