The race for Grand Forks County sheriff just got a little more crowded.
Roland Riemers, 66, said he's gathering signatures for a spot on the ballot. He joins three members of the sheriff's department -- Deputy Chris Hutton, Cpl. Mike Lee and Maj. Bob Rost -- and Grand Forks police detective Mike Flannery.
Riemers, a fathers' rights activist and real estate investor who owns apartments in Grand Forks, does not have law enforcement experience but said he has familiarity with the legal system.
"Hopefully, I'll make the race a little more interesting if nothing else," he said.
Riemers has run for several other posts, including as an independent candidate for the U.S. House in 2006, Libertarian candidate for governor in 2004, independent candidate for the state House from District 43 in 2002 and in North Dakota's Democratic presidential primary in 1996.

Candidates for sheriff must turn in 300 signatures by April 9.
The top two vote-getters in the June 8 primary will face off in the Nov. 2 general election.
Sheriff Dan Hill, who's held the office since 1991, has not announced publicly whether he'll run for re-election but has previously said he will not.
