Annual Big Event service project attracts more than 1,000 UND volunteers

More than 1,000 UND student, faculty and staff volunteers took to the streets of the Greater Grand Forks community Saturday to complete service projects for the 11th annual Big Event.

More than 1,000 UND student, faculty and staff volunteers took to the streets of the Greater Grand Forks community Saturday to complete service projects for the 11th annual Big Event.

The community service project brought volunteers to homes, nonprofit offices, churches, parks and other locations.

The day started at 9 a.m. at the UND Wellness Center with remarks by Grand Forks Mayor Mike Brown and UND President Robert Kelley.

The crews worked from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. while sporting the event’s familiar T-shirts proclaiming “do work.”

The Big Event is meant to say “thank you” to the Greater Grand Forks community for their support of UND, according to the event’s website.

The more than 120 service projects included raking, washing windows, cleaning out flower beds, sweeping out garages and driveway areas, cleaning gutters and deep cleaning of churches and nonprofit office spaces, according to a UND news release.

Organizations and homeowners are able to request volunteers each year through a form available on the on the event’s website.
