GOODLANDS, Man. -- Six firearms, more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition and several containers of fuel were seized after a vehicle ran the border at Goodlands, Man., on Friday. Goodlands is just north of Bottineau, N.D.

An American man was taken into custody and faces numerous criminal charges along with counts under the Immigration Refugee Protection Act and Customs Act.

RCMP Sgt. Line Karpish says the vehicle, which had Wisconsin licence plates, was travelling north on Highway 21 when the driver refused to stop for police.

RCMP from four detachments were dispatched to intercept the vehicle, which was finally stopped when a spike belt was deployed.

When officers approached the vehicle they detected the odour of gas and became concerned something inside might be explosive.

The RCMP explosive disposal unit was sent out to secure the scene and traffic was briefly rerouted around the area.

Karpish said the Canada Border Service Agency and U.S. Customs and Homeland Security were also involved in the investigation.
