The American Crystal Sugar Co. plant in East Grand Forks has been fined $50,000 for water quality violations.
The $50,000 was the third-highest fine levied by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency in the fourth quarter of 2010. The only higher fines were $66,000 for water and air quality violations at Heron Lake BioEnergy in Heron Lake and $55,000 for air quality violations at Koda Energy of Shakopee.
The only other penalty assessed in northwestern Minnesota for the fourth quarter was a $3,500 fine for feedlot violations at Rolfson Farms in Bagley.
The MPCA found 47 violations totaling $355,000 in penalties in the fourth quarter and 203 violations totaling $2.8 million in penalties for 2010.
