A 22-year-old man who told police last month that he was kidnapped in Grand Forks by a friend has not returned detectives' phone calls, stalling an investigation into the alleged crime.

The Grand Forks Police Department received a report Aug. 8 that Richard Reierson was possibly being held against his will, which led officers to find Reierson and speak with him, Lt. Rahn Farder said.

Reierson, of Williams, Minn., told officers the ordeal lasted nearly two days and that physical force was used to hold him, according to a police report.

"Upon initial investigation, he appeared to be just fine," Farder said Monday. "Whether he was being held against his will is still under investigation."

Since his first interview with police, Reierson has not returned investigators' calls, and without any contact from him, the investigation will not proceed, Farder said.

Farder would not say whether police believe Reierson's claim was bogus.

The Herald's attempts on Monday to reach Reierson at a number listed on the police report were not successful.
