FARGO - Police say a man accused of car prowling was treated at a Fargo hospital for cold exposure after a police dog tracked him to a hiding place behind an air conditioning unit in a backyard.
Police received a call at 4:07 a.m. today about a car prowler trying to pry open a garage door in the 2400 block of 20th Avenue South. While officers were en route, the witness advised them the suspect had left in a vehicle northbound on Park Boulevard, Sgt. Mark Lykken said.
Officers searched the area and found a vehicle backed into a driveway with its trunk open in the 1600 block of Flickertail Drive South. When an officer turned into the cul-de-sac, the suspect ran from the scene, Lykken said.
Using a K-9 unit, police tracked the suspect through backyards in the neighborhood for about 45 minutes to an hour, eventually apprehending him in the area of 15th Avenue and 23rd Street South. Police found items believed to be stolen in the suspect's vehicle, Lykken said.
Benjamin Paul Emerson, 24, of Fargo, was arrested on suspicion of burglary, unlawful entry to motor vehicle, theft from a motor vehicle and resisting police.

Before being booked at the Cass County Jail, Emerson was taken to Sanford Medical Center for treatment for exposure, as he was wearing only a sweatshirt and no jacket, Lykken said.
