Agassiz Audubon sets volunteer programs

The Audubon Center of the Red River Valley near Warren, Minn., is offering "Second Saturday" and "Second Sunday" volunteer programs for trail workers, birders, native plant enthusiasts and photographers to help out with a variety of projects.

The Audubon Center of the Red River Valley near Warren, Minn., is offering "Second Saturday" and "Second Sunday" volunteer programs for trail workers, birders, native plant enthusiasts and photographers to help out with a variety of projects.

The volunteer programs will be held the second Saturday and second Sunday of every month from April to October. Volunteers should pre-register by calling (218) 745-5663 at least three days prior and plan to arrive on site by 9 a.m. Saturdays or 1 p.m. Sundays.

Volunteer projects include planting shrubs, clearing trails, raking, trimming trees, maintaining the orchard and prairie, removing invasive plants, splitting logs, monitoring bird nest boxes, counting birds and taking digital photos. The Center also is looking for volunteers to inventory and/or maintain equipment.

Youths younger than 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or other parent-designated adult. If there is a group of volunteers younger than 18, one adult supervisor per five young people is required. Staff will assign participants to work teams. The work teams will break out into groups throughout the site. Sessions on Saturday will be from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Sessions on Sunday will be 1 to 4 p.m.

Volunteers should be prepared for changing weather, dress in layers and have appropriate clothing for light rain or to protect against full exposure to sun. Bring work gloves and wear sturdy boot or shoes, long pants and long-sleeved T-shirts. Bring drinking water, snacks, sunscreen and a hat. Precautions for preventing poison ivy exposure and reducing irritants will be explained on-site.
