During a long weekend of leisure from work, many people in the region are busy making sure that Memorial Day is still a time to remember the sacrifices made by members of the military.
For those who want to take time to during the holiday weekend to take part in remembrance ceremonies, several events are planned around the region.
• The American Legion Auxiliary and the American Legion will sponsor Poppy Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in Grand Forks. Poppies will be available for purchase at Home of Economy, Kmart, Walmart, and the south Hugo's. All proceeds will benefit programs for veterans.
• The American Legion Post 238 in Michigan, N.D., will hold Memorial Day services on Monday at the following cemeteries and times: 8 a.m. at West Sarnia, 8:30 a.m. at Enterprise Finnish, 9 a.m. at Lomice, 9:30 a.m. at Zahradka/Pecka, 10 a.m. at East Sarnia, noon at Melrose, 12:30 at Michigan Cemetery. At 1 p.m. a program will be presented at the Michigan Civic Center.
• A Memorial Day ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. at Memorial Park North Cemetery in Grand Forks. The ceremony will feature guest speaker Michael G. Venaccio Sr.

• The Fisher American Legion Post 242 will host a Memorial Program at 10 a.m. Monday at the Fisher School. At 10:35, the club's honor guard will proceed to the Greenwood cemetery in Fisher, Minn. The guard will also visit the Fisher Lutheran Cemetery at 11 a.m. and Bygland Cemetery at 11:25 a.m. Volunteers will be placing 300 new metal crosses, with 265 stenciled with the names of deceased veterans from the area. The Women's Auxiliary will serve lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Fisher American Legion. The event welcomes any American Legion members.
• Memorial Day Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Resurrection Cemetery in East Grand Forks. The Memorial Address will be given by National Guard cadet Ty Domben.
• Gov. Doug Burgum has directed all government agencies to fly flags at half-staff until noon on Monday in observance of Memorial Day.
• Grand Forks City Hall and other city offices will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. Garbage and recycling collection will also be delayed a day. Buses will not be in operation on Memorial Day.
• East Grand Forks City Hall and offices will also be closed for the holiday. Residential refuse and recycling pickup will be delayed a day, but commercial refuse pickup will remain the same.
• Perkins restaurant will offer a free Magnificent Seven meal to veterans and active duty members on Memorial Day.
