BISMARCK - The North Dakota Board of Higher Education voted 5 to 3 today in favor of an 8.8 percent tuition increase at North Dakota State University.

Board member Richie Smith said supporting the increase came down to what the students wanted. Student government members support the increase unanimously and several leaders attended the meeting today to show support.

Board members who opposed the increase said they worry about what ramifications there will be during the next legislative session.

"I want to be careful that what we're trying to do in the short term doesn't cost us more in the long run," said Grant Shaft, who voted no to the increase.
