6-year-old killed in crash near Cando, N.D.

CANDO, N.D.-A 6-year-old child was killed and two others were hospitalized as the result of a two-car crash in Towner County on Thursday.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the driver of a 2014 Toyota Prius was northbound on U.S. Highway 281 about 3 miles north of Cando, when he slowed to turn west onto 77th Street N.E. At the same time, a 1999 Pontiac Mountaineer attempted to pass through the intersection but was struck on the passenger side by the Prius. The struck vehicle skidded across the road and rolled into the east ditch, ejecting the 6-year-old boy who was not properly secured.

The boy was declared dead at the Towner County Medical Center. The 52-year-old male driver and a 47-year-old female passenger were airlifted to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, according to the Patrol. Information on their conditions was not provided. All occupants of the vehicle were from St. John, N.D.

The occupants of the Prius, listed as 44-year-old male from Devils Lake and an 8-year-old and 10-year-old, both from Cando, were not injured, according to the accident report.
