DEVILS LAKE -- Two Devils Lake residents have been charged in connection with a psychedelic drug-growing operation.
Devin Eugene Johnson, 25, and Ashley Nicholson, 22, have been charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to manufacture, a Class A felony, possession of a controlled substance (spice), a Class C felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class A misdemeanor, according to the criminal complaint.
The arrests were made during a May 4 probation search of the home of Johnson and Nicholson after officers discovered two rooms in the apartment were being used for a Psilocybin-growing operation, Ramsey County State’s Attorney Lonnie Olson said.
Psilocybin, a Schedule 1 drug, is more commonly called a psychedelic mushroom.
Officers also found two bags of “spice,” more commonly called synthetic marijuana, also a Schedule 1 drug, and a pipe with suspected spice residue, according to the complaint.

If convicted on all charges, the two face a sentence of up to 26 years in prison and a $33,000 fine.
The Devils Lake investigation was a cooperative effort between the Lake Region Narcotics Task Force, the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office, the North Dakota Department of Parole and Probation, the Devils Lake Police Department and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Olson said.
