Seventeen candidates are vying for a seat in the Spirit Lake Tribal Council starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday at tribal headquarters in Fort Totten.
Leander "Russ" McDonald, who represented the Fort Totten district on the council, left the position to become tribal chairman a month ago.
Among the candidates are Clarise Ann Brownshield, who lost her seat on the council to McDonald, and former council member Shelly Luger.
Others include Dale Alberts, Deborah Little Bendickson, Lisa Marie Burdick, Mary Cavanaugh, Clemence Charboneau, Vanessa Demarce, Allyson Demarrias-Bartlett, Cheryl Good Iron, Arliss Krulish, Erich Longie, George Longie Sr., M. Yvonne Longie, Lorraine "Josie" McKay and Tara Yankton.
The two candidates with the most votes will go to a runoff election next week.
