STAPLES, Minn. — Two Staples siblings have been charged in a February incident involving the shooting of a dog north of Staples in Wadena County, some of which was recorded and posted to social media.
Josiah W. Shegstad, 20, and Tayiah V. Shegstad, 18, have been charged with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor, and unlawful depositing of garbage/litter, a petty misdemeanor.
The case started when a dead dog, with its leash and collar still on, was found Feb. 17 on the Crow Wing River landing in McGivern Park north of Staples. At the time, it was unknown who the dog owners were as there were no tags on the collar.
Feb. 19, Wadena County Sheriff’s Office received calls regarding a video of the dog being shot on social media. In the video, it shows an individual shooting the dog and another person kicking snow on the dog. Laughter could be heard in the video. The dog appeared motionless before and after the gunshot. There were names attached to the Facebook post and follow-up was conducted with said individuals, according to Wadena County Sheriff’s Office. Citations were filed March 11 by the Wadena County Attorney’s Office.
