A scam phone call has been circulating where the caller pretends to be a Grand Forks County sheriff’s deputy from the arrest warrants division, according to a statement released by law enforcement.
The caller claims there is an active warrant for the person who answers the phone and issues instructions to clear the warrant by paying a bond amount over the phone. The caller tries to persuade victims to use a money transfer service to send prepaid cash cards, gift cards or money via credit or debit cards.
The sheriff’s office said in a press release that it never solicit bonds for an active warrant over the phone and does not accept bond payments over the phone. If called by such a scammer, hang up and contact the sheriff’s office at (701) 780-8280.
