Red River High School educator named a finalist for North Dakota Teacher of Year
Ivona Todorovic selected as one of four finalists for the award, given annually by the state Department of Public Instruction
GRAND FORKS – A Red River High School teacher has been named one of four finalists for the North Dakota 2023 Teacher of the Year award, State School Superintendent Kirsten Baesler has announced.
Ivona Todorovic, who teaches in the English Language Learner (ELL) program, was selected as a finalist from a group of 48 North Dakota County Teachers of the Year.
Todorovic has taught in the ELL program since 2005. She was first hired by Grand Forks Public Schools in June 1995 as a Title 1 paraprofessional at Lake Agassiz Elementary School, serving as a paraprofessional for eight years.
Todorovic also taught second grade at Phoenix Elementary School for the 2004-2005 school year.
Baesler plans to visit each finalist’s school to celebrate the achievement. The 2023 Teacher of the Year award-winner will receive a $15,000 grant to use for promoting the teaching profession.
“As a state, we want to lift up our educators and give them the honor and respect they richly deserve,” the superintendent said in a news release. “They have handled some of the toughest educational challenges in the history of our state in recent years, and they have done it with confidence and style. These four finalists are exemplars of excellence in their profession, and all of North Dakota should be proud of them.”
The four finalists will be interviewed in early August by an eight-member committee that includes representatives of school administrators, teachers, school boards, nonpublic schools, the state Department of Public Instruction, the state Department of Career and Technical Education, and a Teacher of the Year.
Gov. Doug Burgum and Baesler will announce the 2023 North Dakota Teacher of the Year in September. The winner will compete for the national Teacher of the Year award, which is administered by the Council of Chief State School Officers, a national educational organization based in Washington, D.C.
Along with Todorovic, the finalists for the North Dakota 2023 Teacher of the Year award are: Abby DeBord, Centennial Elementary School, Bismarck; Megan Margerum, Northern Cass Public School, Hunter, N.D.; and Megan Wald, Linton (N.D.) High School.
