JAMESTOWN, N.D.-An oversized load became wedged in the underside of the westbound Interstate 94 exit 257 overpass at 11:55 a.m. Thursday, April 26, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
The patrol said Robert McBride, 48, Alberta, Canada, was driving a 2013 Peterbilt semitrailer hauling an oversized air-cooled heat exchanger from Claremore, Okla., to Calgary. The patrol said McBride failed to follow the designated routed noted on the oversize load permit and continued westbound on I-94 before noticing the overpass at exit 257. He slowed the semitrailer until it was traveling at about 15 mph before lodging the load under the overpass.
The patrol said a tow truck pulled the load backward to dislodge it. McBride backed up the semitrailer one mile to U.S. Highway 281. Police officers escorted the truck along the proper route.
Jaime Olson, North Dakota Department of Transportation communications manager, said exit 257 was shut down while the overpass was inspected. She said the exit reopened around 2 p.m.
McBride was cited for violating conditions of an oversized load permit.
