MAYVILLE, N.D. — A man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a rural Mayville after a lengthy standoff with police on Wednesday, Jan. 18.
Law enforcement officers from the Traill County Sheriff’s Office, North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) and the Department of Homeland Security attempted to serve a search warrant to a resident farmstead, according to a report from the Traill County Sheriff’s Department.
A 59-year-old man barricaded himself in an interior room inside a shop building, according to a report.
After a couple of hours, the Grand Forks SWAT Team, along with the bomb squad and crisis negotiator were called in to assist in negotiations.
A crisis negotiators spoke with him via phone for nearly an hour and a half, in an attempt to get him to come out of the room.

The SWAT commander said during those conversations the man claimed he had access to a gun, but did not threaten to harm anyone except himself.
The man was pronounced dead at 6:58 p.m., according to the report, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Minnesota Department of Criminal Apprehension was also called in to assist, the report said.
