Man dies after vehicle-pedestrian collision in McHenry, North Dakota
Incident occurred shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 18.
McHENRY, N.D. - A 21-year-old Grace City, North Dakota, man died of injuries after he was struck by an SUV in the early morning hours of Sunday, Sept. 18, in McHenry, the North Dakota Highway Patrol reported.
Cayler Ellingson was transported to a Carrington hospital by ambulance after the crash. He later died of his injuries.
The driver of the 2003 Ford Explorer, 41-year-old Shannon Brandt of McHenry, has been charged with DUI-related vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a crash involving a fatality. Further charges may be considered as the investigation continues, the patrol said in a news release Sunday evening.
Brandt was not injured in the crash, the patrol reported.
According to the patrol report:
A street dance had been held in McHenry, and at 2:55 a.m., the Explorer struck Ellingson as he was walking on Jones Street, directly east of Hohneck Street.
Ellingson suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken by ambulance to CHI St. Alexius Health Carrington Medical Center, in Carrington, where he died.
The Highway Patrol and North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation are investigating the circumstances and events that led to the crash and Ellingson's death.
Other agencies responding to the collision include the Foster County Sheriff’s Office and Carrington Police Department.
